When facing the many challenges at the end of life, families should be able to focus on ensuring comfort and quality of life for their loved one. But studies show that concerns about paying for end-of-life care often take priority. As baby boomers age, and provide care for their aging parents, these concerns are justified.
In addition to providing quality medical care and emotional support, hospice care can also ease these financial concerns. For more than 25 years, the Medicare Hospice Benefit has provided a comprehensive and cost-effective model of end-of-life care. This benefit covers virtually all aspects of hospice care with little out-of-pocket expense to the patient or family. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization reports that more than 10 million Medicare beneficiaries have received this high quality care at the end of life.
About 80 percent of hospice care if paid for through the Medicare Hospice Benefit. In addition, most private health plans, HMO’s and Medicaid cover hospice services. Medicare covers these hospice services and pays nearly all of their costs:
If a person does not have coverage through Medicare, Medicaid or a private insurance company, Hospice of Queen Anne’s will work with the person and their family to ensure that needed services are provided
Home Care Services - Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans reimburse a portion of the expenses involved in hospice care. Services not reimbursed are covered through the generous donations of individuals, businesses, and community organizations.
Hospice Center Services – There is a room and board charge on a sliding scale, based on a patient’s ability to pay. This charge helps offset the costs of care, food, medications, and facility overhead specific to the center.
Hospice Services at other Locations – Hospice of Queen Anne’s also provides care in third party locations such as assisted living centers, nursing homes, and hospital-based inpatient beds. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans reimburse a portion of the expenses involved in hospice care. Services not reimbursed are covered through the generous donations of individuals, businesses, and community organizations.
